Configuring Your Sidekick

Each sidekick has a configuration page called its Sheet. This page goes through the Sheet tab by tab: what each setting does, and which ones are worth changing first.

Opening the Sheet

Go to Sidekicks in the admin sidebar (it's called My Sidekick if your plan has a single sidekick). You can open a sidekick's Sheet in two ways:

  • Right-click its avatar in the carousel and choose Edit.
  • Switch to Grid View, open a card's More options menu and choose Edit.

The Sheet has an Identity card at the top and a row of tabs underneath. The tab you were last on is remembered, and each tab has its own address (for example #body), so you can bookmark one or share a link to it.

Identity

The Identity card with the sidekick image, name, slug, description and the Agent is enabled checkbox
The Identity card sits above the tabs and is always visible.
  • Sidekick Image: drag in a square image (256×256 or larger, up to 5 MB), or press Generate with AI. You can add an optional description in Describe the look (optional)…. Generating takes 30–90 seconds.
  • Sidekick Name: the name people see in chat.
  • Slug (URL-friendly ID): the short ID used in your embed links. It's fixed once the sidekick is created, so any embed code you've pasted keeps working.
  • Description: a one-line summary, shown in the sidekick's info panel.
  • Agent is enabled: untick to take the sidekick offline without deleting it.

Mind: how it thinks

"How your Sidekick thinks — model, reasoning, and knowledge."

The Mind Module: turn on the places a sidekick may think, then pick what runs in each.

Mind Module

A Mind Module is a ready-made AI model setup. Many split the work in two: a fast model handles easy turns and a stronger one takes the hard ones. Modules are grouped by where they run:

PlaceWhat it meansExamples
CloudRuns anywhere: phone, tablet or browser. This is what your website visitors use.Cloud Qwen 3.8 (Cerebras), Cloud GLM
HybridEasy turns run on your computer and hard ones go to the cloud.Hybrid Gemma 4 → Qwen 3.8
LocalRuns only on your computer, so nothing leaves it. Needs the desktop app.Local Gemma 4, Local Qwen 3.8

Each place has a toggle. Click a module tile to open Choose a Mind Module. There you can star the modules you use, and your starred modules appear in the switcher inside the chat. Each tile shows whether it can run Senses. The Single model option uses one model for every turn, but Senses can't run with it.

Not sure what to pick? Keep the cloud default. It is fast, works everywhere, and is the setup the platform is tuned for. Only add Hybrid or Local if you use the desktop app and want some conversations kept on your own computer.

Temperature

Each place has a Temperature slider. Lower values make answers steadier and more predictable. Higher values make them more varied and creative. Values between 0.6 and 0.8 suit most sidekicks.

Background work

Abilities that run on their own, such as Archivist and Senses Pulses, use the model chosen under Background work — abilities like Archivist, and Pulses — runs on:. Leave it on the cloud model unless you have a reason to change it.

Knowledge Base

The bottom of the Mind tab shows which documents this sidekick can read:

  • Results to return: how many passages from your documents the sidekick reads before it answers (1–50; the default is 5). Raise it if answers miss details spread across many documents. Lower it if answers wander.
  • Documents: the documents linked to this sidekick, with a search box. A document only helps once it has finished processing, and the list shows which ones are ready.
  • + Add documents: search your library and link more documents. Knowledge Base ↗ opens the full library. See Knowledge Base.

Body: voice, hearing and avatar

"How your Sidekick looks, sounds, and hears."

The Body tab showing the Speech section with an ElevenLabs cloud voice, a Voice ID and a TTS model, and a Local voice below
Speech, like Mind, lets you choose a cloud voice and, optionally, a voice that runs on your own computer.

Speech (its voice)

Turn on Cloud and pick a voice provider, then fill in that provider's voice setting:

ProviderWhat you enterGood to know
ElevenLabsVoice ID and TTS modelThe default for new sidekicks, on Eleven v4 Turbo. Eleven v4 and v4 Turbo follow inline tags such as [laughs] or [whispering]. Flash v2.5 has the lowest latency.
Fish AudioReference IDExpressive voices with adjustable speed and temperature.
Cartesia SonicCartesia voice UUIDOne Cartesia key covers both speech and hearing.
InworldVoice nameChoose a voice by name.

Turn on Local to use Local Chatterbox, a voice cloned on your own computer. You clone the voice in the desktop app. In the browser, local options show the note "Open this Sidekick in the desktop app to download the model this needs."

Hearing (understanding speech)

Hearing turns what people say into words. In the cloud you can choose Deepgram Nova-3, Cartesia Ink Whisper (which detects the language by itself) or Cartesia Ink 2 for English. Local Whisper runs on your own computer through the desktop app.

Avatar / Video Settings

To have face-to-face video conversations, pick an Avatar Provider and turn on Enable Video Chat in the Connections tab. Video chat is included on the Champion plan and up.

ProviderWhat you need
TavusA Face ID (leave it blank to use Tavus's stock face), plus a Tavus API key under API Keys.
BithumanAn IMX model file, or a portrait.
Beyond PresenceAn Avatar ID.
HeyGen LiveAvatarA LiveAvatar ID.
Ken BurnsNothing extra. It slowly pans and zooms over generated images, with an optional starting image. It's an easy option with no avatar account.
Local SoulX / Local SoulX (HD)A portrait. Runs on your own computer in the desktop app.

Sound Settings

  • Thinking Sound: a soft sound, such as keyboard typing, that plays while the sidekick looks something up. It fills the silence in voice and video calls.
  • Ambient Sound: a steady background sound such as an office, a forest or a city, with its own volume slider.

Spirit: personality

"Who your Sidekick is — their soul and personality."

The Spirit tab with the Soul editor showing soul.md and a Start from template button
The soul is written in the sidekick's own words: who it is, how it speaks, and what it will never do.

Soul

The soul.md editor holds the sidekick's personality, backstory and speaking style, written in Markdown. Press Start from template for a ready-made outline with these headings:

# Who I am # How I speak # What I care about # Never

You don't need to list abilities, formatting rules or facts about the user here. Sidekick Forge adds those automatically, including what the sidekick knows about the person it's talking to (their Lore).

Write it like a character brief, not a rulebook. "I answer in two or three sentences unless asked for more" works better than "ALWAYS BE CONCISE". Add a few lines under Never for the topics you want it to stay away from.

Personality Engine

Five sliders set the "Big Five" personality traits the sidekick uses while it talks: Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness and Neuroticism. They work alongside the soul, adjusting its tone without rewriting it.

Settings: usage and extras

"Operational settings — usage, monetization, and advanced options."

The Settings tab with Usage This Month cards for voice minutes, text messages and embedding chunks, and the Show Knowledge Base Citations option
Usage for this sidekick this month, plus a few extra options.
  • Usage This Month: this sidekick's voice minutes, text messages and embedding chunks for the current billing month, with Refresh. To see usage across your whole account, use Monitoring.
  • Show Knowledge Base Citations: shows the source documents under an answer that used your knowledge base, so people can check where it came from.
  • Supertab Voice Paywall (optional): charge visitors per session or by subscription for voice, video or text chat through Supertab. It needs a Supertab account. Email help@sidekickforge.com if you'd like to set it up.

Saving your changes

Most settings save when you press Save Changes at the top of the Sheet. A few save the moment you change them, and they say so: abilities ("Abilities save automatically"), Senses, Scheduled Tasks and Wizards.

Changes apply from the next conversation. To try them, press New Conversation in the chat on the Sidekicks page.
